Summary

An electrifying novel about a woman in thrall to the exhilarating rhythms of Manhattan, lost in the dizzying promise of youth, and fatally naive to the dark pressures of fame。

When Rolling Stone journalist Kayla McCray is assigned a cover story on pop icon Lexi Mayhem, Kayla stumbles across a startling new angle to the exposé。 Years ago, another rising star from Lexi’s past mysteriously leaped to her death。 Some things are better off forgotten, Lexi says。 Kayla disagrees。

It’s 2005 and Ava Petrova moves to New York with a notebook full of songs and a dream。 Then she meets Lexi, an up-and-coming singer who brands Ava with an enigmatic new stage name and introduces her to an intoxicating city alive with possibilities。 From fast friends and kindred spirits to creative muses and inseparable soul mates, Ava and Lexi embark on a parallel journey to stardom, but there is room for only one at the top。

As past and present converge, Kayla chases the ghost of a young woman doomed by betrayal and erased by a secret, and unravels the truth that it takes more than ambition to become a star。

Watch out for when the momentum finally hits!Lexi and Ava are best friends, starting out their music careers。 Years later, Kayla sets out to write a story about it and ends up unraveling a mystery。The story is told from two perspectives, two timelines。 It’s a slow burn for the first 1/3 of the book (honestly thought it was going to be a LGBT romance for a while lol), but man, when it picks up, it really picks up。 It really does get hard to put down!

I read this book as a free Amazon Kindle book where expectations are usually fairly low。 This was a wonderful surprise! Not great literature but an interesting read and the whodunit at the end was plausible, not one of those "where did they come from?"。 The ending was a little too neatly wrapped up with all the characters but it kept me thinking about it when I wasn't reading it which is always a good sign。 I read this book as a free Amazon Kindle book where expectations are usually fairly low。 This was a wonderful surprise! This book was ok。 Not super suspenseful, not super thrilling, but it was mildly interesting for me。 Some of the personal relationships in it didn’t make sense to me and I don’t feel like they contributed to the story in any way。 It was easy enough to finish over a weekend trip in the airports, so not really a super special book for me。

I chose this as my Amazon pick for March and it didn't disappoint。 A dual narrative that flips from 2006 to 2019 and narrated by Ava Arcana and Kayla, the Rolling Stones journalist was captivating。 Loved the mystery of it all, thought I knew what would happen and was pleasantly surprised。 Book hits stores in April 2023。Goodreads review published 12/03/23 I chose this as my Amazon pick for March and it didn't disappoint。 A dual narrative that flips from 2006 to 2019 and narrated by Ava Arcana and Kayla, the Rolling Stones journalist was captivating。 Loved the mystery of it all, thought I knew what would happen and was pleasantly surprised。 Book hits stores in April 2023。Goodreads review published 12/03/23 。。。more

I Read It In One Day…When I should have been getting work done, but I couldn’t put it down。 Great book; well written, it keeps you guessing。 You know how it ends but find yourself wishing for a different outcome。 I normally dislike books that jump from one point in time to another, or one person’s perspective to another, but in this book it works。 Read it yourself and see if I’m wrong。 😉

Jealousy at it's worstThis is a smart thriller with more than the usual number of suspects。 The author artfully sketches the possibility of each of them。 There is jealousy, greed, power, betrayal, and the loss of a beautiful and talented person。 I was surprised by the relationship between the reporter and the former lover of the murdered woman。 That felt creepy。 There was also a little confusing glitch in the timeline。 All in all, though, a good read。 Jealousy at it's worstThis is a smart thriller with more than the usual number of suspects。 The author artfully sketches the possibility of each of them。 There is jealousy, greed, power, betrayal, and the loss of a beautiful and talented person。 I was surprised by the relationship between the reporter and the former lover of the murdered woman。 That felt creepy。 There was also a little confusing glitch in the timeline。 All in all, though, a good read。 。。。more

I was intrigued that this fictional story was inspired by a rumor about Lady Gaga having a rival in her early days in NYC。 The author totally pulled me into the lives of Ava, the talented singer/song writer who died tragically young and Lexi, who made it to stardom。 Kayla has gotten her cover story with Rolling Stone at last but when she meets Lexi Mayhem, she becomes intrigued by a forgotten footnote from Lexi's past, her friend and rival, Ava Arcana。 Part of what I enjoyed about this book is t I was intrigued that this fictional story was inspired by a rumor about Lady Gaga having a rival in her early days in NYC。 The author totally pulled me into the lives of Ava, the talented singer/song writer who died tragically young and Lexi, who made it to stardom。 Kayla has gotten her cover story with Rolling Stone at last but when she meets Lexi Mayhem, she becomes intrigued by a forgotten footnote from Lexi's past, her friend and rival, Ava Arcana。 Part of what I enjoyed about this book is the theme of women friends, especially the one from our younger days。 It's a topic that book clubs should enjoy exploring because almost every woman has one of those stories about a dear friend that disappointed or betrayed us (or vice versa)。 Well written, fast paced and totally satisfying is how I rate this book。 。。。more

I picked this as my free Amazon Prime book for the month。 The story was intriguing, had a good pace, and a good plot。 I wasn’t a big fan of Kayla’s back story。 It felt like it wasn’t developed enough。 But overall I enjoyed it!

(kindle 1st) Overall, very good。 Enjoyed the story, stayed interested in the 'whodunnit/what really happened?" aspect。 One issue was occasionally the writing didn't seem true, mostly in dialogue。 Moments of "nobody is going to describe it that way"- literary style descriptions slipped into 'regular' people's speech。 Another issue came under 'disconnect/unexplained': things like motivations that were just swept under the rug, characters that completely changed their tunes without explanation (Kea (kindle 1st) Overall, very good。 Enjoyed the story, stayed interested in the 'whodunnit/what really happened?" aspect。 One issue was occasionally the writing didn't seem true, mostly in dialogue。 Moments of "nobody is going to describe it that way"- literary style descriptions slipped into 'regular' people's speech。 Another issue came under 'disconnect/unexplained': things like motivations that were just swept under the rug, characters that completely changed their tunes without explanation (Keats (Kayla's editor)。。。。)。 For that matter, Keats' role - we got a great hint about earlier connections, and then that was it。 That definitely needed follow-up as it absolutely would have affected his actions later。 。。。more

A fun, easy read that did keep me guessing until quite close to the end。 This is definitely a plot driven book and the only place it fell down for me was the writing of the characters which seemed a little flat。 At times so the actions seemed out of character but I think that’s because the characters were only portrayed in quite a superficial way。

The Rise and Fall of Ava Arcana popped up as an option for March's Amazon First Reads, and it sounded right up my alley, so I immediately downloaded it。 Unfortunately, this story didn't work for me as well as I had hoped。 A few things that didn't work for me in this book: I really struggled with Lexi as a character — she was self-centered and I found it hard to root for her throughout the book/didn't find it super believable that her and Ava would be such good friends based on the way she treate The Rise and Fall of Ava Arcana popped up as an option for March's Amazon First Reads, and it sounded right up my alley, so I immediately downloaded it。 Unfortunately, this story didn't work for me as well as I had hoped。 A few things that didn't work for me in this book: I really struggled with Lexi as a character — she was self-centered and I found it hard to root for her throughout the book/didn't find it super believable that her and Ava would be such good friends based on the way she treated Ava。 I also didn't understand the point of Kayla's friendship backstory with Astrid。 It didn't feel like it equally compared to the Lexi/Ava story in the past, and I found it difficult to make the connection the author was trying to make。 I love a thriller/mystery and I was curious to see how the author might weave that element in, but ultimately, it fell a little bit flat to me。Some things I liked; I did enjoy how the story flip flopped between Lexi/Ava in the past and Kayla in the present。 I found myself intrigued by both timelines。 I also enjoyed the rock and roll/music vibes — I started watching Daisy Jones and the Six on Prime at the same time I read this book so it was fun to sort of picture what these characters might look like as they performed at various bars and clubs。 Something that I really enjoyed was Kayla's job as a journalist at Rolling Stone。 As someone who has worked as a journalist, it was fun to dive into the magazine world as Kayla embarked on writing her first cover story。 The author did a fantastic job of detailing the interview + writing process。2。5 ⭐ 。。。more
